“Let the children come to me” (Mt 19:14)

Christ is the reason for this school. It is a message you will see at many Catholic schools in Maine and across the country, highlighting their commitment to helping children strengthen their relationship with Jesus and to embrace His commandment to love their neighbor as themselves.

“Catholic education is crucial because it fosters not only academic excellence but also spiritual and moral development, helping students grow into compassionate and ethical individuals,” says John Yorkey, principal of St. John’s Catholic School in Brunswick.

The Diocese of Portland is blessed to have 10 Catholic schools, serving children from Bangor to Sanford. This school year, they welcomed more than 2,600 pre-K to Grade 12 students.

The schools share a commitment to making a Catholic education available to any family who wishes it for their children, but that is where they could use your help.

“The mission of Catholic education is to minister to all children. To make this possible, we are deeply indebted to those who contribute to our schools, provide endowments, or fund scholarships that allow children of all circumstances to be part of our schools. Jesus exhorted His followers to bring the children to Him. Catholic education does this through the generosity of others,” says William Ridge, principal of Holy Cross School in South Portland.

Every diocesan or parish-based Catholic school in Maine has endowment funds established through the Catholic Foundation of Maine. Many funds have been established by alumni grateful for the education they or their children or grandchildren received. Some are for specific programs at the schools, while others provide scholarships that open doors.

“Endowments play a vital role by providing financial stability and supporting the school's mission to offer high-quality education and maintain affordable tuition, ensuring that the values and traditions of Catholic education remain accessible to all families,” says Principal Yorkey.

Anyone can contribute to an existing endowment at the Catholic Foundation at any time and in any amount. Every donation, no matter what size, increases the impact that a fund will have. Donations can be made online by going to www.catholicfoundationmaine.org/online-giving.

If you would like more information about available endowments or about possibly setting up a new one, the foundation staff is available to help you.
